A working rat setup needs housing, accessible food and room for the colony. Check those basics before buying more animals or processing your breeders.
How to start rat ranching#
Rat Wrangler is a specialist starting scenario. In another run, the community reference describes unlocking Rat Ranching through Wild’s network, which queues a ranching visitor. An unlock is not a promise that the visitor will arrive immediately.
The reference also describes trapping rats with processed cheese. For an established colony, concentrate first on reliable housing and food rather than assuming every trapping attempt will succeed.
Why are the rats not eating?#
Check where the food actually is. The ranching reference says animals feed from their own inventory: food sitting elsewhere in the shop does not feed a rat inside a cage. Use the cage’s feeding equipment and make sure its supply is not empty.
Avoid rat meat as feed because of the documented prion-disease risk. Remove dead animals and waste instead of letting a crowded cage become your storage area.

Why are the rats not breeding?#
Start with a healthy, eligible male and female and leave space for offspring. Maturity, hunger, pregnancy and genetics affect reproduction; two rats sharing a cage do not guarantee babies the next morning.
The husbandry reference distinguishes breeding maturity from the displayed adult age. It also describes pregnancy taking multiple nights, with genetic traits affecting timing. Check the animals’ condition and traits before treating a delay as a bug.
- Confirm the pair’s sex and breeding eligibility.
- Check that both animals can eat.
- Look for pregnancy, illness or infertility.
- Make room before the colony grows.
Maintain the Animal Cage#
The cage has a feeding slot and wears down with use. The item reference describes escape risk when its condition becomes very low. Inspect it regularly instead of waiting for animals to disappear.
Scrap Metal repairs the cage; Metal Ingots expand it within its upgrade limit. Repair and expansion serve different purposes. An expanded but neglected cage still needs maintenance.
Keep breeding stock out of processing#
The ranching reference describes a blade killing a live rat before a later use butchers the corpse. Processing inputs are therefore not a harmless place to park breeders.
Keep your breeding pair separate from animals intended for processing. The cited ranching analysis is for 0.46D / Build 26337366, so this guide avoids promising fixed breeding yields or daily profits for the release build.
